Nadia Comaneci, (born November 12th of November, 1961 Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej [now Onesti] Romania) Romanian gymnast who was the first gymnast to be awarded a perfect score of 10 during the Olympic event. Bela Karolyi later Romanian Gymnastics Coach, met Comaneci as she was only 6 years old. In 1969, she participated in the Romanian Junior Championships and finished 13th. She won in 1970. When she competed in her first international contest in 1972 a pre-Olympic junior meet for the communist-bloc countries she won three gold medals In 1973 and 1974, she was an all-around junior champion. She won against Russian Lyudmila Torishcheva, the five-time European Champion at her first international senior competition in the year 1975. In the event, she took home four golds as well as a silver. In 1976, she was the first female athlete to perform a reverse double salo on the uneven parallel bar as part of her dismount.
